Exhibition 'A Secret History of Blue and White' Contemporary Australian Ceramics

(12-26 September 2006 in Hanoi)

Artists: Robin Best, Stephen Benwell, Bronwyn Kemp, Vipoo Srivilasa, Gerry Wedd

Curator: Stephen Bowers

Exhibition venue: Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, No. 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Hanoi

A Secret History of Blue and White highlights the diversity and strength of Australian ceramics and positions it within European and Asian ceramic histories. While the reputation of Australian craft has grown steadily in Europe and North America, Asialink acknowledges the importance of sharing these developments within our region.

Each artist moves beyond the historical understandings of blue and white. By exploring personal ways to make (blue) cobalt ‘speak’, these artists add new layers of expression and narration to the already complex story of blue and white.

A Secret History of Blue & White is a touring exhibition initiated by the Asialink Centre of The University of Melbourne in partnership with JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design, which is assisted by the South Australian Government through Arts SA. It is supported by Australia Council for the Arts, the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It is also supported by the Australian Embassy in Hanoi as part of its ongoing public diplomacy and cultural relations program.

Photography was invented to capture a visual image of the real world, but 54 works of nine Australian artists in Supernatural Artificial play with the capacity of photography to create images glorying in the fictional, the slippery, the mysterious, the ghostly and the fake. As the result, our vision of the world is expanded, distorted, questioned, illuminated and played with.

This is an Asialink & Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces touring exhibition. It is supported by the Australian Embassy in Hanoi as part of its ongoing public diplomacy and cultural relations program.
