What is AEI?
Australian Education International (AEI) is the Australian Government agency working on developing Australia’s education and training relationship and engagement with the world. Part of the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST), AEI works on behalf of the Australian education and training sector to promote Australia as a source of high quality international education and training and advanced science and technology.
Australian Education International - Vietnam was established in 1994. Since its inception, AEI Vietnam has operated two offices at the Australian Embassy, Hanoi and the Australian Consulate General, Ho Chi Minh City. The two offices operate under the supervision of a Counsellor, (Education, Science and Training), who is based at the Australian Embassy, Hanoi. With a team of professional and dedicated staff in our two locations and partners in all major cities, AEI Vietnam has been supporting and facilitating many initiatives in education, science and training between Australia and Vietnam, as well as the growth of Australia's international education and training sector in Vietnam. AEI Vietnam provides advice on education and training to the Australian and Vietnamese Governments, education and training providers and other interested organisations. We also provide in-country assistance to Australian education and training providers for their effective planning and investment in the Vietnamese market.
AEI Vietnam’s major objectives are to:
• Co-operate with the Vietnamese Government on education, science and training matters;
• Enhance Australian participation in education, training and research in Vietnam;
• Build links between Australian and Vietnamese education, training and research institutions;
• Provide information in Vietnam about Australian education and training institutions and courses through our Australian Education Centres and outreach services;
• Facilitate the formation of Australian alumni groups to enhance the relationship between Australia and Vietnam;
• Assist senior Vietnamese delegations to visit Australia and learn about our systems and facilitate senior Australian officials to visit Vietnam;
• Collaborate with government and private education agents in Vietnam to provide a professional and honourable service to people who choose to study in Australia.
Cooperation in education and training between Australia and Vietnam
The Australian Education and Training system is highly regarded in Vietnam. Australia is the market leader in education services in recruiting students for offshore studies. In 2005, approximately 5,296 Vietnamese students were studying in Australia with three-quarters of the total being full fee-paying private students. The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) offers 150 scholarships annually and the Australian Department of Defence, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) also offer scholarships or study support to Vietnamese students. Australian universities and institutions also offer significant scholarships. These scholarship programs and other co-operative projects are contributing to the development of human resource capability in Vietnam and further fostering goodwill and co-operation between Australia and Vietnam.
In Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other major cities, demand for education and training is especially high in such areas as English language training, business and management training, hospitality and tourism and information technology. The emerging middle class is gradually becoming an important market for education and training services in the near future.
Currently, approximately 34 Australian institutions are in the process of delivering around 62 in-country courses in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in higher education, vocational education and training, and English language training. These courses were either conducted by Australian instructors delivering courses in country, through collaborations with Vietnamese education and training institutions and by distance education. RMIT International University Vietnam, remains the only 100% foreign owned university in Vietnam. A number of other Australian universities, vocational and technical institutions and English language training schools also have a significant presence in Vietnam and are further enhancing Australia's leading role in education provision in country.
