CHILD MIGRATION
IMPORTANT CHANGE: POLICE CHECKING REQUIREMENTS FOR SOME SPONSORS
From 27 March 2010, if an applicant under 18 years old is included in an application for a Child or Extended Eligibility category visa, the sponsor and the sponsor's spouse or defactor partner are required to provide police certificates from:
-
Australia, if they have spent a total of 12 months or more in Australia since turning 16 years old; and
-
Each country other than Australia in which the person has spent a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years since turning 16 years old.
The information contained in these police certificates will be used to determine whether the sponsorship must be refused under the Migration Regulations or whether there is any compelling reason to believe that the grant of the visa would not be in the best interests of the minor visa applicant.
Below is a link to a detailed Question and Answer Sheet about this procedure.

An Australian National Police Check may be obtained from the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Information on obtaining the check is available from the AFP website.
