AUSTRALIAN EMBASSY HANOI


The Australian Embassy is seeking applications from Vietnamese nationals for full-time contract positions of Immigration Officers working within its Immigration Section in Hanoi. Successful applicants may be offered employment contracts until 30 June 2010. It is possible those contracts may be extended beyond this time, or that permanent positions may be subsequently offered on the basis of this selection round.

The main duties of the position are:
- Undertake a wide range of operational and administrative tasks, including making recommendations in accordance with appropriate legislation, policy and procedures; 
-  Attend to inquiries from clients and provide information and advice; 
-  Prepare routine correspondence; 
-  Providing interpreting and translation services as required; 
-  Act as a Sub-Collector for application fees and undertake counter duties as required; 
-  Operate office equipment and computer systems, including immigration data bases.

Successful candidates will demonstrate: 
-  Fluency in spoken and written English and Vietnamese languages; 
-  Good understanding of work in a legislative and regulatory environment, and the ability to learn quickly migration legislation and processing requirements for relevant visa classes; 
-  Ability to work well in a team as well as independently; 
-  Ability to work effectively under pressure, in particular to set priorities, meet targets, identify needs and develop procedures; 
-  Strong command of computer skills. 
-  Ability in the Lao language would be an advantage but is not essential

SELECTION CRITERIA

Selection for this position will be based on merit and judged against the following, specific selection criteria. Applications must clearly address the selection criteria listed below to be considered. Applications that fail to address the selection criteria are likely not to be successful.

1. COMMUNICATING
Good oral and written communication skills, including fluency in both written and spoken English and Vietnamese. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and clients from a range of diverse backgrounds.

2. WORKING IN TEAMS
Ability to work as a team member including the ability to contribute to the achievement of team/work unit goals and team cohesion. An understanding of participative, safe and healthy work practices.

3. MANAGING INFORMATION
Good information management skills, including the ability to interpret and apply Australian migration legislation and procedures. Ability to effectively use a number of computer programs to find, extract and analyse information.

4. MANAGING WORK
Ability to organize work, set priorities and monitor work flow to achieve workplace goals within set timeframes. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Capacity to work independently on specific tasks and in a team environment.

5. FOCUSSING ON QUALITY
Ability to provide a quality professional service, apply ethical work practices and demonstrate integrity in all aspects of work. Ability to respond flexibly to changing demands in the workplace and to contribute ideas to improve efficiency in the workplace. Ability to participate in performance management processes, including the ability to seek, receive, provide and act on performance feedback.
