APPLICATION FOR AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT
The Australian Citizenship Act 2007 provides for the registration of a person born outside Australia on or after 26 January 1949 as an Australian citizen by descent if at least one of the parents was an Australian citizen at the time of the person's birth.
The information below is intended for applicants wishing to apply for Australian citizenship by descent in Vietnam. Applicants should also read the information regarding registration of Australian citizenship by descent on the Australian Citizenship website.

Attached is a checklist of documents or other evidence that should be submitted in support of an application for Australian citizenship by descent. This is specifies the minimum documentation only and is not exhaustive. It is open to applicants to submit any documentation which they believe will assist in the assessment of their application.

If lodging an application for Australian citizenship by descent, please attach this checklist to the front of the application and tick the box next to the documents or other evidence you have attached.
DNA testing
If the claimed Australian citizen parent is not included on the applicant's birth certificate, and alternative satisfactory evidence of parentage cannot be provided, an applicant and the claimed Australian citizen parent may be requested to undertake DNA testing in order to establish their relationship.
Australian passports
Information about eligibility for, and processing of, Australian passport applications is available from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website or from the Consular Section at the Australian Embassy, Hanoi or the Australian Consulate-General, Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnamese Government exit formalities
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade may also be able to provide advice in respect of Vietnamese Government exit formalities for children born in Vietnam who seek to exit using an Australian passport.
