Travel insurance and medical facilities
Visitors to Vietnam are strongly advised to take out appropriate travel insurance before entering Vietnam. Travellers should ensure they have appropriate medical insurance to cover them whilst travelling in Vietnam as there is no free medical treatment available.
Alternatively, insurance can be purchased in-country from Vietnam Insurance Corporation (BAO VIET in Vietnamese) which offers limited travel insurance services (ie. health and property) to foreigners travelling or residing in Vietnam. There are some medical clinics oriented towards services required by foreigners and which are staffed by foreign medical personnel. If you do not have personal travel insurance, the cost for receiving medical care can be very expensive and, depending on the assistance provided, can quickly run into thousands of dollars. Neither the Embassy nor the Consulate-General is able to pay for your medical treatment.
